PEORIA, Ariz. — The ACL Mariners are champions of the Arizona Complex League West.

Behind four no-hit innings from starter Harrison Kreiling, a pair of home runs from Kelvin Alcantara and another long ball from Leandro Romero, the Mariners defeated the ACL Royals 7-2 on Wednesday night at the Peoria Sports Complex to officially clinch the division title.

Seattle entered the night needing a victory and a Padres loss to secure first place. The Mariners handled their part of the equation, while the ACL Reds defeated the Padres 2-0, sending the Mariners to the postseason with one game remaining in the regular season.

The Mariners wasted no time setting the tone.

Leandro Romero launched a solo home run to right field in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead before Alcantara followed with a solo shot of his own in the second. Seattle then broke the game open with a four-run third inning, taking advantage of defensive mistakes while Konni Durschlag, Martin Gonzalez, Joshua Francis and Romero all drove in runs to build a commanding 6-0 advantage.

Wednesday also marked the return of Durschlag, who was back in the lineup after missing time with an injury. The outfielder reached base three times, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored, providing an immediate spark in the lineup.

Seattle’s pitching staff made the early offensive outburst stand up.

Making his second professional start following Tommy John surgery, Kreiling delivered another outstanding performance. The right-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced, allowing no hits over four scoreless innings while striking out six. He consistently attacked the strike zone and kept the Royals from mounting any offense, continuing what has quickly become an impressive return to the mound.

Ferny Barreda followed with two dominant innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out four to earn the victory and preserve the shutout into the seventh inning.

The Mariners added the finishing touch in the bottom of the sixth.

Leading off the inning, Alcantara crushed his second solo home run of the night, sending a towering drive over the right-field wall. The blast extended Seattle’s lead to 7-0, and Alcantara punctuated the moment with an emphatic bat flip as he watched the ball leave the yard before beginning his home run trot.

The Royals finally broke through in the seventh after Caleb Franzen entered in relief. A throwing error extended the inning before Daniel Lopez lined a two-run single to right field, trimming Seattle’s lead to 7-2. Both runs were unearned.

Cristian Aray quickly extinguished the threat after entering in relief, recording the final seven outs of the game without allowing a hit to seal the victory. Combined, Mariners pitchers limited the Royals to just three hits while striking out 12, as Kreiling, Barreda and Aray controlled the game from start to finish.

Romero finished 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI, while Alcantara went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two RBI and three runs scored. Durschlag collected two hits and an RBI in his return, and Martin Gonzalez added an RBI single and two walks as Seattle totaled 10 hits.

As the final out settled into Martin Gonzalez’s glove at first base, the celebration was on. Players streamed from the dugout to congratulate one another after capturing the ACL West title and punching their ticket to the postseason.
