SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The ACL Mariners showed why they’re firmly in the Arizona Complex League playoff race Monday night, erupting for 16 runs on 15 hits to knock off the league-leading ACL Rockies, 16-9, at Salt River Fields.

Seattle (29-18) jumped on the Rockies early and never looked back, handing Colorado (33-14) just its 14th loss of the season. The Mariners built a 16-2 lead through five innings before weathering a late Rockies rally to secure the victory.

The win was highlighted by the rehab debut of Leo Rivas, who appeared in his first game with the ACL Mariners while on assignment from Triple-A Tacoma. Rivas reached base three times, launched a two-run home run, drove in three runs and scored twice.

Seattle wasted little time getting on the board. After Rivas was hit by a pitch to open the game and later picked off, Yonger Bautista lined a two-out double before Leandro Romero followed with an RBI single to give the Mariners an early 1-0 lead.

The Mariners added another run in the second. Kelvin Alcantara singled before Diego Contreras and Konni Durschlag drew walks to load the bases. Rivas worked another free pass to force home Alcantara for a 2-0 advantage.

Po-Chun Lin took care of the rest early on the mound. The right-hander turned in one of his strongest outings of the season, tossing four innings while allowing two runs on nine hits without issuing a walk. Lin stranded runners throughout his outing and limited the damage despite constant traffic on the bases.

Seattle’s offense broke the game open in the third.

Romero opened the inning with a single before Dalton Davis doubled home a run. Contreras followed with an RBI single, Durschlag reached on an error that plated another run, and Rivas capped the five-run inning with a towering two-run homer to left in his rehab debut, extending the lead to 7-2.

The Mariners weren’t finished.

After Durschlag singled to begin the fifth, Bautista ripped a two-run double to right. Jo Oyama, who entered as a pinch-runner for Romero in the fourth, added a two-run triple before Davis delivered another RBI single. Moments later, Diego Contreras crushed a no-doubter over the right-field wall, a three-run blast that put the Mariners comfortably in front, 16-2.

Contreras finished with four RBIs, while Davis drove in two and Bautista added two more. Oyama scored twice and collected two RBIs despite logging just one official at-bat.

Colorado refused to go quietly, scoring once in the fifth, twice in the sixth and six more in the seventh. Alan Carpinteiro earned the victory after recording four outs in relief, while Caleb Franzen followed with an inning of work.

With the Mariners holding a commanding lead, position player Martin Gonzalez took the mound to finish the game. The Rockies pushed across four runs against Gonzalez in the seventh, trimming the deficit, but Seattle’s early offensive explosion proved far too much to overcome.

Seattle’s lineup produced contributions throughout the order. Bautista went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Romero collected three hits and drove in a run. Davis finished 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, while Alcantara added two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.

The victory sends the Mariners into Tuesday’s matchup against the ACL White Sox with momentum after knocking off the Arizona Complex League’s top team. First pitch from Camelback Ranch is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:00 local time.
