SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The ACL Mariners built an early lead, weathered multiple Giants rallies, and held on for a 9-8 victory Friday evening at Papago Sports Complex.

Seattle scored in five different innings and capitalized on nine walks, timely hitting, and a pair of Giants errors before Wuilliams Rodriguez closed the door with a scoreless seventh to earn his second save of the season.

The Mariners struck first in the opening inning. Diego Contreras and Nick Becker opened the game with back-to-back singles before a failed pickoff attempt by catcher Broedy Poppell sailed into the outfield, allowing both runners to score for a quick 2-0 lead.

San Francisco answered in the bottom half. Luis Hernández singled and Christian Koss walked before Anthony Marquez tied the game with a two-run triple to right field.

Seattle reclaimed the lead in the second. Konni Durschlag doubled with one out, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Carlos Gonzalez lined an RBI single to center, putting the Mariners back in front 3-2.

The Giants evened the score in the third after Christian Koss reached on an error and later crossed the plate on another Mariners miscue following Anthony Marquez’s single.

The Mariners took control with a three-run fourth. Carlos Gonzalez drew a two-out walk before Deuri Castillo beat out a bunt single. Diego Contreras followed with an RBI single to right, and a balk by Jose Rengel brought home another run. Yorger Bautista added an RBI single to center to extend Seattle’s advantage to 6-3.

Seattle added another in the fifth without recording a hit. Kelvin Alcantara and Brayden Corn walked before Konni Durschlag was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carlos Gonzalez worked another walk to force in Alcantara and make it 7-4.

The Mariners added valuable insurance in the sixth. Becker drew his third walk of the night before Dalton Davis doubled to left-center to score him. After Alcantara struck out, Corn delivered an RBI single to left, extending Seattle’s lead to 9-4.

The Giants refused to go quietly. Luis Hernández doubled home Josuar Gonzalez in the fourth before San Francisco scored three times in the sixth on a groundout, sacrifice fly, and RBI single by Koss to trim the deficit to 9-7. Anthony Marquez then opened the seventh with a solo home run, bringing the Giants within one.

Rodriguez settled in from there, retiring the next three hitters to preserve the victory.

Contreras finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Carlos Gonzalez reached base four times, drove in three runs, and scored once. Becker reached three times and scored twice, Davis doubled home a run, and Bautista and Corn each collected RBI singles. Durschlag added a double and scored after reaching base twice.

Dylan Wilson worked 3 2/3 innings before Maximo Rodriguez (3-1) earned the victory in relief despite allowing three runs over 1 1/3 innings. Rodriguez escaped further damage before Wuilliams Rodriguez recorded the final six outs, allowing one run while striking out two to secure the save.

The Mariners improved to 26-16 with the victory and will face the ACL Guardians at home Saturday at 11:00 am.
