PEORIA, Ariz. — The ACL Mariners saw their six-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday as the ACL Royals pulled away late for an 11-1 victory at Surprise Stadium.

Seattle took an early lead in the second inning. With two outs, catcher Manuel Almeida and left fielder Konni Durschlag recorded back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners before Almeida scored on a throwing error during a pickoff attempt by Royals starter Marwys Cabrera.

Kansas City answered with a solo home run from Tyson Moran in the fourth inning before taking the lead in the fifth. The Royals broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning and added three runs in the ninth to seal the victory.

Despite the loss, right-hander Connor Wilford continued his recent stretch of strong outings. The Washington State product allowed one run on two hits while striking out five over four innings. Wilford has allowed one run or fewer in each of his last three appearances, including a three-inning relief outing against the ACL Rangers last week that earned him the win.

The Mariners were unable to generate any additional offense after the second inning, as the Royals’ bullpen kept Seattle off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

With the loss, Kansas City moved a half-game ahead of Seattle for first place in the ACL West and improved to 3-1 against the Mariners this season. Seattle remains a half-game ahead of the ACL Angels for the league’s final playoff spot.

The Mariners and Royals continue their series Thursday, the second of four meetings between the clubs over a 10-day span.
