GLENDALE, Ariz. — For five innings Tuesday night, the ACL Mariners appeared to be in complete control.

Instead, the ACL White Sox rallied for five runs in the sixth inning, erasing a four-run deficit and handing the Mariners a 9-8 loss at Camelback Ranch.

Despite the setback, Seattle remains tied with the ACL Royals atop the ACL West standings.

The defeat overshadowed a productive night at the plate, as the Mariners collected 13 hits, launched three home runs and received a strong effort from starter Ferny Barreda.

Making his first start after earning a save against the ACL Angels, Barreda turned in one of his sharpest outings of the season. The right-hander struck out seven over four innings, allowing three runs on three hits while walking one.

Barreda retired six of the first seven batters he faced and punched out the side in the second inning. Although Osniel Castillo’s two-run homer in the third gave the White Sox an early lead, Barreda settled back in and kept the Mariners within striking distance before exiting after four innings.

Seattle’s offense broke through in the fifth.

Martin Gonzalez opened the inning with a solo home run to left field, his third of the season, before Joshua Francis singled and stole second. Leo Rivas followed with a walk, setting the stage for Stuart Fairchild, who launched a three-run homer to left to give the Mariners their first lead of the night at 4-3.

Seattle continued to build on that momentum.

Nick Becker doubled later in the inning and came around to score on a throwing error by White Sox third baseman D’Angelo Tejada, extending the Mariners’ lead to 5-3.

The Mariners added three more runs in the sixth. After Francis reached on a strikeout and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Landon Hodge, Leo Rivas delivered an RBI single to center. Two batters later, Nick Becker crushed a two-run homer to left field, his fifth of the season, stretching Seattle’s advantage to 8-4.

The White Sox answered immediately.

Reliever Maximio Rodriguez surrendered consecutive doubles to D’Angelo Tejada and Landon Hodge before RBI singles from Alejandro Cruz and Osniel Castillo cut the lead to 8-6.

Cristian Aray entered in relief, but Chicago completed the comeback when Yordani Soto lined a bases-clearing single into left field, scoring three runs to give the White Sox a 9-8 lead.

Seattle had one final opportunity in the seventh. Manuel Almeida opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball before Bryant Mendez entered as a pinch-runner. Rivas worked his third walk of the game to bring the tying run aboard, but White Sox reliever Felix Doroteo recorded the final out to preserve the victory.

Rivas reached base five times, finishing 2-for-2 with three walks and an RBI. Becker went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs, while Fairchild drove in three with his first homer of the season. Gonzalez added a solo homer, and Francis scored twice while stealing his ninth base of the year.

Although the Mariners’ offense produced eight runs and 13 hits, Seattle could not hold an 8-4 lead as the White Sox capitalized on a decisive sixth inning.

The ACL Mariners will have a chance to respond Thursday when they return to Camelback Ranch in Glendale to face the ACL Dodgers, with first place in the ACL West still up for grabs.
