GLENDALE, Ariz. — The ACL Mariners built early momentum for the second consecutive game, but another middle-inning rally by the opposition proved costly as the ACL Dodgers erased an early deficit to claim a 6-5 victory Thursday night at Camelback Ranch.

The loss was Seattle’s second in a row and dropped the Mariners to 29-20, moving them one game behind the ACL Royals in the ACL West standings.

Seattle wasted little time getting on the board.

Leo Rivas opened the game with a walk before Stuart Fairchild was hit by a pitch. After Nick Becker struck out, Leandro Romero delivered a two-out RBI single to score Rivas for the game’s first run. Moments later, a throwing error by Dodgers starter Adriano Marrero on a pickoff attempt allowed Fairchild to score, giving the Mariners a 2-0 advantage.

The Mariners added another run in the second without recording a hit. Brayden Corn drew a two-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Nelson Quiroz and scored on a wild pitch to extend Seattle’s lead to 3-2.

After the Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the first, Seattle answered again in the third. Becker reached after being hit by a pitch, stole third base and came home on Romero’s sacrifice fly, putting the Mariners back in front, 4-2.

Starter Juan Cazarez gave the Mariners a chance to win despite battling through traffic on the bases. The right-hander struck out five batters over 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits while walking two.

Cazarez worked out of early trouble after allowing two first-inning runs and retired six consecutive hitters before the Dodgers broke through in the fourth.

Following a fielding error and a wild pitch, Daniel Mielcarek tied the game with a two-run home run to left. After a brief injury delay, Wuilliams Rodriguez entered in relief, but a two-run homer by Leider Padilla gave Los Angeles its first lead of the night at 6-4.

Seattle trimmed the deficit in the fifth when Dalton Davis connected for a solo home run to center field, his second homer of the season, pulling the Mariners within one.

That would be as close as Seattle would get.

Dodgers relievers Jack O’Connor and Joseph Marte combined to hold the Mariners scoreless over the final three innings, retiring seven of the final eight hitters they faced.

Despite scoring five runs, Seattle managed just four hits while striking out 12 times. Romero drove in two runs, Davis finished with a home run and an RBI, and Fairchild doubled and scored during the first-inning rally.

Rodriguez settled the game after replacing Cazarez, tossing 2 2/3 innings while allowing one run on two hits and striking out three to keep the Mariners within striking distance.

The Mariners will look to snap their two-game skid Friday when they return home to face the ACL Padres, hoping to regain ground in the ACL West race.
