GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The ACL Mariners’ attempt at another late comeback was cut short Monday night as a dust storm forced the game to end after five innings, handing Seattle a 5-3 loss to the ACL Guardians at Goodyear Ballpark Complex.

The game was officially called following the top of the fifth inning due to worsening weather conditions brought on by the dust storm. Seattle dropped to 31-21, while the Guardians improved to 30-22.

The Guardians struck first in the opening inning. Angel Abreu led off with a single, stole second and scored on Johan Rodriguez’s RBI double for an early 1-0 advantage.

Cleveland added another run in the second when Carlos Garces singled, stole second and came home on Abreu’s two-out RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Mariners answered in the third without recording a hit. Sebastian De Andrade worked a walk before Martin Gonzalez reached on a throwing error by first baseman Pedro Dalmagro. A passed ball allowed De Andrade to score, and another wild pitch brought Gonzalez home after Nick Becker walked and stole second, tying the game at 2-2 despite Seattle still being hitless.

The Guardians responded immediately in the bottom half. Gustavo Baptista doubled before Dalmagro singled him home, restoring Cleveland’s lead. Later in the inning, Nelson Quiroz reached on an RBI single that was compounded by a throwing error in center field, allowing another run to score for a 3-2 Guardians advantage.

Cleveland created more separation in the fourth. Carlos Garces connected for a solo home run before another defensive miscue helped produce a second run in the inning, pushing the lead to 5-2.

Seattle mounted one final rally in the fifth. Brayden Corn doubled into left field, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Martin Gonzalez’s RBI groundout to trim the deficit to 5-3.

The comeback, however, never had a chance to continue.

As the teams prepared for the bottom of the fifth, a dust storm moved into the Goodyear area, forcing officials to suspend play before ultimately calling the game after the required five innings.

Seattle finished with just one hit, a double by Corn, but capitalized on Cleveland’s mistakes to score three runs. The Mariners drew two walks and benefited from a throwing error, a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Po-Chun Lin (0-3) took the loss after allowing three earned runs on six hits over three innings. Alan Carpinteiro surrendered two runs in one inning of relief, including Garces’ fourth-inning homer.

The Mariners now turn their attention to Tuesday’s matchup against the ACL Athletics at the Lew Wolff Training Complex in Mesa, where they’ll look to bounce back after the weather-shortened defeat.
