TEMPE, Ariz. — Juan Cazarez continued his strong stretch on the mound and Brayden Corn provided the big swing as the ACL Mariners returned to the win column with a 4-0 victory over the ACL Angels on Thursday night at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

Behind 5 2/3 scoreless innings from Cazarez and a balanced offensive attack, the Mariners improved to 27-17, reclaiming momentum after Tuesday’s loss to the ACL Royals.

Cazarez earned his second consecutive winning start, limiting the Angels to five hits while striking out five and walking one. The right-hander consistently worked ahead in the count and escaped the few scoring threats he faced, lowering his ERA to 4.89.

The Mariners broke through in the fourth inning.

After Kelvin Alcantara lined a one-out single to right, Brayden Corn drove a 1-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for his first home run of the season, giving Seattle a 2-0 lead.

The blast was all the support Cazarez needed.

Seattle added two insurance runs in the sixth after taking advantage of an Angels defensive miscue. Dalton Davis reached on an error before Alcantara ripped his second hit of the night, a double to right, putting runners at second and third with one out.

Following a strikeout, Sebastian De Andrade delivered a two-out RBI single through the left side to score Davis, extending the lead to 3-0. Moments later, Konni Durschlag lined an RBI double to right, plating Alcantara for the game’s final run.

Alcantara paced the Mariners’ offense, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk, a double and two runs scored. De Andrade also collected two hits while driving in a run, Leandro Romero added two hits, including his seventh double of the season, and Durschlag finished with an RBI double.

Although the Mariners struck out 11 times, they capitalized when opportunities presented themselves, going 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position while collecting eight hits.

The pitching staff completed the shutout after Ferny Barreda entered with two outs in the sixth inning and recorded the final four outs without allowing a run to earn his first save of the season.

Defensively, the Mariners played a clean game, turning a key fourth-inning double play after Joswa Lugo’s leadoff single erased an Angels scoring opportunity. Seattle finished the night error-free.

The Mariners will look to carry that momentum into Friday’s road matchup against the ACL Royals, with first place in the ACL West once again on the line.
